Who's the Boss?

You’ve always studied that your bones are located inside you, but really? I’d say that we are located inside our bones, we literally are just brains, each provided with a vehicle, having unique characteristics and features, which we will see might not be so unique. Hence it is very important to study and understand how our brains work.

We all know and believe that the brain is the most important organ of our body; all the other organs are mere support system for running the brain. But who tells us all this stuff? The Brain itself!!! So how can one know when the brain isn’t just fooling around with us? The answer is simple, you can’t. All we can do is look wise and try to find what actually controls and influences our thoughts and to do this we need to study how and what the conscious and subconscious mind actually control.

We can look at the whole scenario as this…

The brain is a huge library. The conscious mind is a fit and fast Reader and the subconscious mind is a fat and sloppy Librarian. The Reader demands all kind of books, and it is the duty of the Librarian to provide them to the Reader. Almost all of us are Readers, very few are able to assist the Librarian and it is very rare to see someone who himself has assumed the position of the Librarian. Bouncer? Let’s retry:

Whatever you do, whatever you perceive and however you respond is all your consciousness. To perceive or do something or respond to something, all the data necessary to process information comes from the sub consciousness. Hence, we can say that the consciousness is the input device while the subconscious is the hard drive of the brain.

Hence it is important to note that neither the consciousness nor the sub consciousness is in charge of our brain, but all our actions are the result of a combination of commands from both of them. Let's take an example:

Consider 3 individuals L, M and S. L is a layman, he doesn't give much thought to his surroundings and leads a pretty much mechanical life. M is also a layman, but he pays attention to his surroundings and is aware of what is going on in the world around him. S, however, is no ordinary guy. His mind works exceptionally fast and he is a quick observer like... Umm.... Mini Sherlock Holmes....

Now, have a good look at the image below. Let's try to understand the image from the viewpoints of L, M and S.

As we know L is as an ignorant layman, to him the image above is just a computer mouse. M on the other hand says it is a computer mouse and is also able to tell the type, model and brand of the device. S is a lot more aware and intelligent than the other two, accordingly his response will not only be limited to the technical details of the device but he will also try to analyze the image as a whole. His deductions include‐ This computer mouse is a wired, probably PS2 type of mouse.  The owner of the mouse is quite careless for his objects as is evident from the whole body of the mouse being covered with dust in patterns. The two shining regions on the mouse buttons indicate regular usage with wet or oily hands. Finally, the mouse is heavily used, which is inferred from the fact that the shining part is actually quite big in size.

L does not use his subconscious mind much to analyze and cross check data. M uses both his conscious and subconscious to analyze and verify the image with the information he already knows. S is actually using a lot of data from his sub consciousness to analyze, deduce and synthesize information based on present and previous experiences.

By reading the above example one will surely want to know how to approach a situation like S. The key to this lies within ourselves. We all perform such feats of memory and minute observation daily in our lives without even noticing, hence, it will be fair enough at this moment to say that most of us are an M. What it takes to be an S is just switching from regular to heavy usage of the subconscious, which practically does not mean thinking from a different part of the brain but thinking from different angles and viewpoints. Although this is an important topic we will not discuss it at this moment, it is kept as a privilege for later chapters of this manuscript i.e. after completely understanding the working of the thought processes and the different ways to inculcate the habit of subconscious thinking.
