First Date with the Mind

Do as directed:
Blink!              Again!                        One last time!
Very good. One of the most basic natures of the human mind is to follow a good authorative imperative. Okay, so? This is one fine example of a conscious action and will also serve as a satisfactory abstract definition. But also, by the time you’ve read this you might have already blinked 2 more times. This is a subconscious action. And by now, you must’ve realized that you should thank your Gods, if you believe in any, that our heart is not in our control consciously or subconsciously.

It will be really overwhelming if you the reader, has already grasped the meanings of conscious and subconscious thinking and also actions that come under neither of these two heading. Although, the latter is not a part of our discussion, but it is indeed important to understand it in order to understand the human mind. Like everyone has a unique fingerprint, the brains of all people, too, work differently. Everyone is unique… Just like you. This, sort of, ruins the uniqueness of human existence, but this is the most important point of uniqueness which aids the study of the human mind. All of the studies ever done on this subject is not individual, but is present as a collective data, a generalization of habits and behaviors as observed in most people. Thus, not being unique is a merit in terms of studies of biological and psychological sciences.

Even though the study of consciousness, or sub consciousness for that matter, is very new the researches made in the field are quite remarkable as many myths have been busted and new ideas have been formulated. Although, a perfect definition has not been established yet, we can only count on the “definitions” provided by some experts in the field:

The conscious mind is your awareness of the present moment. You are aware of something on the outside as well as some specific mental functions happening on the inside.
~Ivan Staroversky,
Counselor/Psychotherapist

The subconscious mind consists of accessible information. You can become aware of this information once you direct your attention to it. Think of it as memory recall.
~Ivan Staroversky,
Counselor/Psychotherapist

The Conscious mind consists of everything inside our awareness. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we can think and talk about in a rational way.
~Sigmund Freud,
Neurologist, Psychoanalyst

Things that the conscious mind wants to keep hidden from the awareness are repressed into the subconscious mind.
~Sigmund Freud,
Neurologist, Psychoanalyst
Consciousness is a mere film between two oceans, the subconscious and the super conscious.
~Swami Vivekananda,
Monk, Preacher

Just as unconscious work is beneath consciousness, so there is another work which is above consciousness, and which also is not accompanied with the feeling of egoism. It is only on the middle plane.
~Swami Vivekananda,
Monk, Preacher
