The Double-Cross (1)

As we all know, once a useful thing is made, all the universe conspires to hack/cheat it. This isn't just true for manmade objects but also for natural things. We made computers, so came hackers. We made exams, so came cheaters. In the same way, even the most complex machine in the universe, vwhich sits right above our necks and inside our cranium, too, has ways to persuade it.

Although, the human race is the most intelligent species on earth, we humans ourselves have found lots of ways to fool ourselves. The human mind can be subjected to manipulation and persuasion in ways very few of us can imagine.

We will discuss a few types of cheats mostly used by them to control our minds. But before that, we must know who are "they", who want to use these so called cheats on us. The answer is simple. These are people who want fame, money or recognition for their talents. They are professional psychologists, marketing heads, psychics or charlatans. They are highly proficient in their job and have hundreds of years of experience, well... Not hundreds but 20‐30 years of experience of fooling people. Believe me when I say that these guys can sell glares to blinds, comb to bald and meat to vegans.

These methods of fooling people are very simple and give a very fair idea of how incompetent our brains can become when subjected to pressure. One of these methods is misdirection. Misdirection here means what it means in any dictionary. Here the artist (yes, they too are artists), does an act, wherein, he presents two events back to back but, what he does in between them is what's misdirection. Consider an act where a magician has a coin, he shows it to his audience, then slowly he puts the coin in his hand and rubs or waves the other hand over the first one. This action of rubbing or waving is the misdirection. As we all are busy in watching how well a guy can wave his hands, the magician uses this time to hide the coin and "astonish" us. The biggest misdirection a magician has is a beautiful apprentice. No one can ignore that one.

A second way is of illusion. The artist, here, starts with one trick but ends up with another. TV commercials are a great example of how illusions can affect us. Consider a scenario where a guy is using a notebook. The ad director will show all possible problems in using a notebook, bit then suddenly a new brand emerges that has fully automatic writing, with 2BHK flats, and home automation systems and people are deluded to believe these notebooks are actually worth buying.  Another technique is repetition. The artist takes a simple object or shape and shows it to his audience repeatedly. This leads the viewer in associating that shape with the artist's act or product. Now, consider a product associated with a red disc shape. Now a red disc shape is a very common sight, hence when an individual is repeatedly shown this commercial/ad he start associating/relating the red dot to that object. A great marketing strategy.

We have all seen that fairness cream commercial wherein a girl or a boy is dark as coal and some friend of her/his recommends her/him to use that cream and then after 15 days of use they're as white as snow. We all know that this is not possible, still most of us prefer to use it. Because it doesn't matter how well we know the truth, we still expect the cream to work for us, "It’s made to that job dude, why won't it work?", will it?
